What is DOCX?

Word (.docx) is a ZIP of Office Open XML with far richer layout than Markdown, but how it reads depends on which app opens it.

About the format

A Word document (.docx) is a ZIP of Office Open XML: the body is in word/document.xml, with styles, comments and revisions in separate parts. Compared with Markdown it preserves far richer layout — pagination, headers and footers, footnotes, comments, revision history, precise type sizes and indents. The cost is complexity and software dependence: Word versions and third-party readers may render it differently, and being binary it cannot be inspected directly. It works better as a conversion source than a final reading format.
